This remarkable name derives from their defensive mechanism: they squirt foul-tasting red drops from their mouths when threatened. This liquid is hemolymph, which circulates blood-like in the bodies of invertebrates. The beetles release it by breaking membranes in their mouth. They are flightless and largely nocturnal.
